About Me

Educational History:

I graduated from Jasper High School, Jasper, Texas in 1973.

I earned my Bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia in 1977.

I received my Master's in Education degree from Stephen F Austin University in 1980.

Degrees and Certifications:

Degrees:

Bachelor of Arts  1977

Master of Education 1980

Certificates: Teacher of Young Child (lifetime), Classroom Teacher (lifetime), English as Second Language Certificate

Professional Development:

I have 40 years of classroom teaching experience.

Numerous hours of professional development in the area of reading language arts, classroom management, special education and ESL.

I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 6th grades throughout the years and have extended training focusing on instructional strategies for a wide range of learners from strugglers to Pre AP students. My background in ELA has helped my  effectiveness in teaching 8th grade US History.

My “Why” is to develop life-long learners through the process of inquiry.

Current Position:

When I moved to Dayton, I began teaching Language Arts at Nottingham Middle School in 2006 and am currently teaching U.S. History (Social Studies) in 8th grade.

Previous Position:

I began teaching in 1977 in Marion, Virginia where my husband was employed. My first job was a Title I reading teacher at a small school in the mountains of rural Virginia. We moved back to Texas (our home) in 1978 and I began teaching in Newton. I was employed by Jasper ISD in 1980 as a 2nd grade teacher and stayed in that district until 2006. I was the HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed) teacher/coordinator from 1988-2003. HOSTS was a volunteer program designed to give individualized mentoring to struggling readers. At one time, our program had more than 150 community volunteers signed up to help students. In 2003, I began working strictly with small groups in the Reading Lab program. My husband became the city manager for Dayton in 2005, and we relocated here at that time. Currently, he works for Liberty County as the grant administrator and is the director of the engineering dept.

Family Information:

I have been married to David for 40 years and we have two sons. Drew is 30 and lives near Hillsboro, Tx.  He is a certified firefighter/EMT and was in the Army until 2012.  Daniel is a senior business major at Sam Houston State University and will graduate with a Business Management degree in May 2018.  He is currently studying for the DAT for entrance into dental school in the fall of 2018. Fingers crossed!

Our pet story is all about miniature schnauzers. We love them. They have attitude, personality and spunk. Our newest is named Jaycee; she’s 7 months old and is our main source of entertainment.

Personal Information:

My hobbies are reading and traveling. I also enjoy time with my family and going shopping or “retail therapy” as I call it.
